Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Levi Moses Kokernot was born 23 Dec 1779, Amsterdam, Holland (son of Moses Levie Kokernoot and Rebecca Alexander Pos); died 25 Aug 1827, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana.

    Notes:

From Old River Country, p. 274: drowned in Lake Ponchartrain
birth date from Jackie Barnes (30 Dec 1779, superceded by data from Amsterdam archives)
Kent Gardien says Levi's death ca 1830, based on NO city directories

At least three possible birth dates are reasonable for Levi Moses Kokernot.

    1. Most researchers rely on his civil marriage record (DTB 656/294) of 29 Jan 1808 in which he gives his age as 25 years. Thus his birth date would be between 30 Jan 1782 and 30 Jan 1783. The birth date of his son is variously reported, but generally about 1800. So Levi Moses would have been 18 or so then, so married at age 16 or 17.This seems unusually young. Ages in these marriage records, indeed all civil records are notoriously unreliable. [find example. Maybe Betsy's brother.]

    2. Moses Levi Kokernus had three sons listed in the circumcision records. The first was "Judah called Leib" on 30 Dec 1779. This is unambiguously a son of our Moses. His name is Levi and his age is most consistent with a son born in 1800. I think this is the most likely date but, on the other hand, this Levi could be the child who died 4 Oct 1785 with the name "Levi" recycled later.

    3. There was a "Leib, son of Mosjee" circumcised 24 Nov 1782. This is not unambiguously a Kokernus, since no surname is given, but this birth date (16 Nov 1782) would agree with marriage document discussed in #1, above.

Levi married Betje Nathan Cohen Van Der Beugel Aft 29 Jan 1808, Amsterdam, Holland. Betje (daughter of Nathan Salomon Cohen and Roosje David) was born 1784, Amsterdam, Holland; died 3 Sep 1863, New York, New York. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Betje Nathan Cohen Van Der Beugel was born 1784, Amsterdam, Holland (daughter of Nathan Salomon Cohen and Roosje David); died 3 Sep 1863, New York, New York.

    Notes:

From Jackie Barnes FGR in Kokernot file

Elizabeth used many names. See Notebook 5 p 12-13: Betsy Countyhn and Betsy Kohn in 1829-1831 after death of Levi. Also "Elizabeth Fonderberger." Did business as "Widow Kokernot and son." Also Elizabeth Hart after that marriage.

    Children:
    1. Louis Kokernot was born Abt 1802, Holland; died 22 Feb 1864, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana; was buried Dispersed Of Judah Cem, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana.

  3. 6.  Dittmar died Abt 1815, Waterloo.

Julie Ann Miller. Julie was born 1780, Germany; died Between 1838 and 1841, Chambers County, Texas. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Julie Ann Miller was born 1780, Germany; died Between 1838 and 1841, Chambers County, Texas.

    Notes:

Old River Country, p 280: tells story of trip to New Orleans and Texas with
D.L. Kokernot. Widowed on the way to New Orleans. Received one league land
grant near San Jacinto. Daughter Caroline married D. L. Kokernot.

Cause 16993, Harris County, Texas, Dist Court, George Maley deposition, 13 Dec 1894.
"She had four children in all Caroline, George, and William and one died in infancy in Philadelphia before I was born, do not know whether it was named or not."

Further, in deposition of L. M. Kokernot, 30 Apr 1896, "My mother's maiden name was Caroline J. Dittmar. My grandmother on my mother's side was Juliana Maley. I lived with my said grandmother for some time before she died, maybe two or three years, but am sure I lived with her for a year or more. I was quite young at that time. She lived on Cedar Bayou in Liberty County, Texas at that time. I am nearly sure that my said grandmother could read, because while I lived with her, I have seen her often at night reading the Bible by lamplight...I cannot say whether she could write or not, as I had no opportunity to find out. I was about five years old at that time."

Further, in deposition of Caroline J. Kokernot, n.d.: "I was fourteen years and six months old when married. "I have lived since my marriage, first on the Bay, 9 miles from Lynchburg, Texas; we swapped that place for a place on Cedar Bayou; we left that place for Columbus, and then moved from Columbus to gonzales County, Texas. Mrs. Juliana Maley was my mother's name. My mother could read German; I never saw her write her name... I can neither read nor write...My mother could read in German; she was a good German scholar...I spoke German with her...she lived in my family from that time until she died."

    Children:
    1. 3. Caroline Josephine Ditmar was born 15 Feb 1815, Hesse-Kassel, Germany; died 8 Dec 1898, Gonzales County, Texas.
